Did you know that you might be choosing something about life expectancy when you vote?
In the USA, on average, people in blue states live longer than those in red states, up to seven years between best and worst. The poorest county in New York has a higher life expectancy than the richest county in the Deep South. (Search the internet for something like life expectancy red states, blue states. )
Spending on health, education and social services seem to be key factors in these trends. The economy of the states was less important. Blue states place a higher value on the common good than red states, and are more open to government involvement in society. The economy of Italy has many problems yet life expectancy is higher than the US , even ahead of Canada.
Canada is not the USA; our Canadian health care may have faults but it is a huge benefit.
In the G-20, Japan has the highest average life expectancy, at 84.5 years. Canada is number five at 82.6. China is number 9. The US is 11, with life expectancy of 76.3 years.
When you think about general political policies, do you see taxes as a burden, a punishment, or as a tool for building society?
Government involvement in society – is it protection for children, the environment or is it red tape? Whatever happened to social justice?
There are no simple or easy answers, no blanket answers. Choose in the direction of life.
